Smaller, laid-back & friendly dojo. As a woman, I feel very comfortable training here, and there's been a pretty good ratio of women to men whenever I've been there. The kids classes are great, and Chris is great with helping beginners and giving them personal one-on-one attention in their first judo class. The prices are insanely reasonable, and the grappling class is practically like having a 2nd BJJ class during the week.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the art of controlling someone on the ground using leverage instead of strength. At Snyder Dojo you'll learn it in a relaxed, ego-free room where beginners are coached through every position — for one of the most affordable memberships in town: $60 a month.
What You'll Learn
Beginner BJJ
Wednesday's beginner class walks you through the fundamentals: guard, mount, side control, escapes, and your first submissions.
Advanced BJJ
Wednesday's advanced class and Saturday afternoon BJJ go deeper — sweeps, passing, chains of attacks, and live rolling.
Grappling + Judo Included
Your $60 membership also includes Monday no-gi grappling and judo, so you're never short on mat time or takedowns.
Train Jiu-Jitsu Without the Attitude

Common Questions
I've never done jiu-jitsu. Which class should I take?
Start with Beginner BJJ on Wednesday at 6:35 PM. It covers the core positions, escapes, and submissions at a pace that makes sense for new students. When you're ready, stay for Advanced BJJ at 7:30 PM or join the Saturday 4 PM class.
How much does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu cost in Kalamazoo?
At Snyder Dojo it's $60 a month — and that includes every class on the schedule: BJJ, no-gi grappling, and judo. Two family members are $105 and families of three or more are $140. Your first class is free and there's no contract.
Am I too old or out of shape to start BJJ?
No. Jiu-jitsu is built on leverage and technique rather than size or strength, and you set your own pace. Plenty of adults start in their 30s, 40s, and beyond. You'll get in shape by training — you don't have to get in shape first.
Is there a lot of ego in class?
Not here. Safety and comfort come first, and partners look out for each other. You'll roll hard when you want to and dial it back when you need to.
Do you teach gi or no-gi?
Both. The Wednesday and Saturday BJJ classes are jiu-jitsu, and Monday is no-gi grappling. One membership covers all of it.
What Students & Parents Say
Rated 5.0 out of 5 stars across 21 Google reviews.
You can't beat it for Judo in the kzoo area, and there's some fantastic stuff being taught in MMA, grappling and BJJ. Add in some very reasonable rates and you've got a great place to train. I also bring my boys here for the kid's judo class, and it's really helping them to grow up right.
