No-Gi BJJ & Submission Grappling in Kalamazoo

Monday nights at Snyder Dojo are for no-gi grappling — jiu-jitsu and submission grappling in a rash guard and shorts. One student called it "practically like having a 2nd BJJ class during the week." It's fast, technical, and a great workout.

What You'll Learn

Adult Grappling

Monday 6:35 PM: positions, escapes, leg locks and upper-body submissions — no gi required.

Grappling Workout

Monday 7:30 PM: drilling, conditioning, and live rounds to sharpen what you learned.

Wrestle-Up Skills

Judo and grappling under one roof means you learn to get the fight to the ground on your terms.

Submission Grappling the Practical Way

No-gi carries straight over to self-defense and to sports like wrestling and MMA, because nobody wears a kimono on the street. Students who come for BJJ often say Monday grappling is their favorite night of the week.

  • No gi to buy — shorts and a rash guard are all you need
  • Beginner-friendly technique portion every class
  • Included in your $60/month membership with BJJ and judo

Common Questions

What is no-gi grappling?

No-gi grappling (also called submission grappling or no-gi BJJ) is jiu-jitsu done in a rash guard and shorts instead of a heavy kimono. Without lapels to grab, you control the body with underhooks, wrist control, and head position. It's fast, athletic, and very practical.

What should I wear to no-gi class?

Shorts without zippers or pockets and a fitted t-shirt or rash guard. Remove jewelry and trim your nails. That's it.

Is no-gi better than gi jiu-jitsu?

Neither is better — they train different grips and habits. Gi training rewards patience and control; no-gi is faster and closer to wrestling. Training both makes you a more complete grappler, and your Snyder Dojo membership includes both.

Can a beginner take the no-gi class?

Yes. The Monday 6:35 PM grappling class teaches technique, and beginners are paired with partners who'll go at your pace. The 7:30 PM Grappling Workout is more conditioning and live rounds.

What Students & Parents Say

Rated 5.0 out of 5 stars across 21 Google reviews.

★★★★★
Smaller, laid-back & friendly dojo. As a woman, I feel very comfortable training here, and there's been a pretty good ratio of women to men whenever I've been there. The kids classes are great, and Chris is great with helping beginners and giving them personal one-on-one attention in their first judo class. The prices are insanely reasonable, and the grappling class is practically like having a 2nd BJJ class during the week.

★★★★★
A friendly and welcoming dojo to people of all skill levels with no pressure to compete. Making sure people are safe and comfortable is a top priority. The instructor, Chris Snyder, has decades of experience with both kids and adults. There is no better dojo to bring your kids to and/or take classes yourself.

★★★★★
Beyond being extremely skilled in judo and grappling, Chris Snyder created a fun and well-structured learning environment. I always felt better about myself after every class. … Also, the fees are incredibly reasonable and there are no contracts.
