Judo Classes in Kalamazoo

Snyder Dojo has been Kalamazoo's home for judo for years. Chris Snyder has been grappling his whole life, and he teaches judo the way it should be taught: safe falling first, clean technique, and no egos on the mat. Whether you've never set foot in a dojo or you're a black belt looking for a new home, you'll fit in here.

What You'll Learn

Learn to Fall Safely

Every beginner starts with ukemi — breakfalls that protect your head and joints. It's the foundation of judo and the reason judo is so safe to learn.

Throws & Takedowns

Grips, balance-breaking, footwork, and throws, built up step by step. You'll learn how to control someone on their feet — not just on the ground.

A Real Workout

Tuesday and Thursday Judo Workout sessions follow the technique class. Expect a full-body conditioning session that never feels like a treadmill.

A Laid-Back Dojo with Serious Judo

Students describe Snyder Dojo as smaller, friendly, and relaxed — but the instruction is tight and well-structured. Visiting judoka who drop in while passing through Kalamazoo regularly leave five-star reviews.

  • Beginners welcome: one-on-one attention in your first class
  • Experienced judoka: drop in for $10 when you're in town
  • No pressure to compete — train for fitness, confidence, or medals
  • Pairs with BJJ: your membership includes ground grappling too

Common Questions

Do I need any experience to start judo?

No. Most adults who walk in have never done judo. Chris starts every new student with how to fall safely (ukemi), then builds up grips, balance-breaking, and throws one step at a time. Beginners get one-on-one attention in their first class.

Is judo good for self-defense?

Yes. Judo teaches you to stay on your feet, control someone who grabs you, and put them on the ground without striking. Learning to fall without getting hurt is a life skill on its own — on ice, stairs, or anywhere else.

Do I have to compete?

No. Plenty of students train for fitness, confidence, and fun. If you want to compete, Chris can help you get there — but there's no pressure either way.

What's the difference between judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Judo focuses on throws, takedowns, and pins from standing. BJJ focuses on the ground — positions, escapes, and submissions. They complement each other, which is why one $60 membership at Snyder Dojo includes both.

How much do adult judo classes cost?

$60 a month for every class on the schedule — judo, BJJ, and no-gi grappling. Two family members are $105 and three or more are $140. Drop-ins are $10 and your first class is free. No contracts.

You can't beat it for Judo in the kzoo area, and there's some fantastic stuff being taught in MMA, grappling and BJJ. Add in some very reasonable rates and you've got a great place to train. I also bring my boys here for the kid's judo class, and it's really helping them to grow up right.
